WHAT IS CBD?
You probably have heard of CBD, which is the trendy wellness product at the moment. CBD (fully known as cannabidiol) is a naturally occurring compound in the cannabis plant, and it has become an increasingly popular substance in therapeutic oils and alternative medicines. The plant itself has been used for thousands of years because of its medicinal benefits.
CBD is one of the hundred chemical compounds (called cannabinoids) found in every variety of the cannabis family, including hemp. CBD is closely linked to another cannabinoid called tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the chemical that produces the psychoactive effects when you consume cannabis. However, unlike THC, CBD doesn’t make you feel stoned or high. It makes it possible to enjoy the medical benefits of cannabis without any effects on the brain.
How does CBD work?
Many people have often wondered why CBD is capable of treating many symptoms in the body. The reason is that the human body has an endocannabinoid system, which regulates critical functions in the body, including sleep, appetite, digestion, and immune functions. What this means is that the body produces its own cannabinoids, which is the substance it uses to regulate activities.
With the help of a range of receptors in the brain that assimilate the cannabinoids, CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system and stimulates it to produce certain effects necessary for the treatment of health conditions in the body. Hence, CBD is capable of eliciting certain responses like naturally occurring cannabinoids in the body without creating complications in the entire system.
Is CBD safe?
Another question people ask is if CBD is safe for consumption. The simple answer is “yes.” CBD is safe due to the following reasons:
- No psychoactive effects: CBD is just one of the many cannabinoids in the cannabis plant and won’t make you feel stoned since it is different from THC.
- Impossible to fatally overdose: Although it is possible to take an overdose of CBD, there is no evidence that you can fatally overdose the substance. Rather than lead to death, taking an overdose of CBD leads to a range of effects, which only lasts for a few hours before they wear out.
- Doesn’t show up on drug tests: Athletes are usually careful about the substances they consume, so they don’t get into trouble when they are tested for drugs. Thankfully, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) permits the use of the extract for soreness and inflammation.
- Can be used by sick and healthy people: CBD is not meant for sick people alone as even healthy people can use it to boost their health. It is highly beneficial to both the sick and the healthy alike.
Are there side effects?
While CBD is not regulated by the FDA, there is a set of generally accepted guidelines on the correct dosage. Taking an overdose of the substance can lead to a number of side effects, including:
- Anxiety
- Dizziness
- Drowsiness
- Diarrhea
- Dry mouth
- Nausea etc
Conclusion
CBD has exploded in popularity and availability over the years as you can now find it in lattes, oil, gummies, lotions, and more. The extract holds a lot of benefits and is also safe for consumption.
